Astronauts
Astronauts are people
who go to space, but it
takes a lot of training for
them to get there. To be an
astronaut, first you have to
study science in university
or college and then do a job
in the kind of science that
you studied for at least
three years.
Astronauts also have to
train for a long time. They
do fitness training and
learn how to the jobs they
will be doing in space.
Some astronauts are
pilots and it’s their job to
fly the space shop. Other
astronauts are mission
specialists. They may have
lots of different jobs,
including keeping the space
ship working well and
doing experiments. Some
experiments that have
been done in space are
growing zucchinis and
seeing how well animals,
like flies or squids, adjust to
living in space. Astronauts
also sometimes help launch
satellites into orbit.
Most of the jobs
astronauts do are inside
the space station, but
sometimes they have to
leave go out into space,
which is called a spacewalk.
When they do a spacewalk,
they wear a special kind of
suit that keeps them warm
and lets them keep
breathing.
