Date squares
3/4 cup butter or margarine
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 1/2 cup flour
1 1/4 cup oatmeal
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
For 1/2 cup coconut if desired
Blend dry ingredients. Add butter, and work in with a fork, until crumbly
Add 1/2 of crumbs to 9×12″ pan, press down
Filling
1 pounds chopped dates
1 cup water
1 teaspoon lemon juice
Mix 1 teaspoons flour and 1 teaspoon sugar, add to dates, and cooked until thickened
Pour over crust and spread evenly
Top with the rest of the crumbs and pat down
Bake at 400F for 15 minutes, or until golden
