George was born anenslaved person on a farm in Missouri one year before slavery ended. Georgeloved taking care of the plants on the farm. He could make any plant grow! Hebecame known as the plant doctor.

 

George wanted to learnmore about plants. But the school in his town did not allow Black people. Sowhen he was 11, George left the farm. He went to school in another town. O erthe next few years, he continued his education. His goal was to go to college.And he did! When he graduated, George became a teacher.

 

Later on, George wasinvited to teach at the Tuskegee Institute. While there, he developed over 300products made from peanuts. For example, glue, dyes, plastics and soaps. He alsocame up with the idea of rotating crops. That was growing a crop like cottonone season, but growing a different crop the next. Why? Cotton takes manynutrients out of the soil. George suggested planting crops like sweet potatoesand peanuts that restored the soil. His ideas helped the farmers a lot! He wasknown as one of the most helpful scientists in the world. He found practicalways for science to make people’s lives better.
