History of Christmas Trees

For much of history people brought the branches of evergreens into their home’s during the COLD Winter months.

The green branche’s reminded them that ALL of the diferent kinds of green plants would grow again when the warm weather came.

However, the Germany is credited with starting the tradition of bringing a Christmas tree inside.

The workers would bring the evergreen tree’s inside.

They decorated them with the sweet’s to be enjoyed by apprentices and the children.

Adding Candles to the Christmas tree

It is said that Martin Luther, the 16th-century Protestant reformer, first added lighted the candles to a Christmas tree.

Walking home one winter evening he was awed by the star’s twinkling
among evergreens.

To recapture the scene for his family, he erected a tree in the house and the wired lighted candles to the branches.

The Christmas tree’s in America at first the Christmas tree’s were NOT accepted by the most of the Americans.
 

The new England Puritans thought decorations were a “pagan mockery” of the Christmas.

In fact, in the 1659, the Massachusetts made it against the law to have any Christmas celebration other than a church service.

The people were fined for having any of the Christmas decorations.

It wasn’t until the 19th century, when the German and irish immigrant’s undermined the Puritan
legacy that Christmas decorations were okay.

The first record of a Christmas tree was in the 1830’s by the German settlers of Pennsylvania.

They had community trees as early asin the year of 1747.

But it was British royalty that made
Christmas trees really popular.

(They had their royal-tree. ☺)

In the year of 1846, the Queen of Victoria and her
German Prince, and the Albert, were shown in the London News standing with their children around a Christmas tree.

The Queen Victoria was very popular.
Whatever she did became
fashionable.

This was NOT only in the britain, but with East coast American Society.

The Christmas tree was no longer odd.

It became a popular tradition to have a Christmas tree in your house.

Decorating the Christmas Tree

By the 1890’s the Christmas ornament’s were arriving from Germany.

The Christmas tree was the gaining popularity around America.

Electricity brought about theChristmas lights.
That made it very possible to easily light up the Christmas tree’s.

This is also safer than using the candles
on a tree.

The Christmas tree’s began to appear in the town to squares across the country.

Having a Christmas tree had
become an American tradition.

Although the Europeans used the small tree’s about four feet in
height, Americans liked the Christmas tree’s to be the reach from the floor to ceiling.

In the early 20th century Americans used homemade ornaments for their trees.

The German-American sect
continued to use apples,
nuts, and marzipan cookies.

The popcorn was another
decoration.
First, it was dyed bright colors.

Then it was placed on strings with berries and nuts.
