How Cheese is Made

Cheese comes from milk.
When the milk arrives at the factory, the first thing they do
is pasteurize it, which means
heating it up to kill all the bacteria in it.

Then after that they add different bacteria and something called rennet, which is what makes the milk get thicker and start turning
into cheese.

They let the milk sit for
18 hours, until it is much thicker, and then it turns
into curds and whey.

The whey isthe liquid that
gets drained out, then they let the cheese curds sit for another 18 hours and they add salt to preserve it.

After that they squish the cheese into shapes, so that
they are shaped like a block or a wheel.

Cheese is usually made from cow’s milk, but goat cheese is made from goat milk.

Cows can make about 30 liters of milk a day, which
is like 15 cartons!

Cows need to be milked at least twice a day, usually in the
morning and then again in the late afternoon.

Femalecows start making
milk when they have a baby cow, called a calf, and then keep making milk for 11 months after that.
