Ireland Lesson #1

Ireland is a country in Europe.
My parents have been to Europe.
Ireland isahead of Canada. If it’s 1:00 here, then it will be 6:00 there.
That is so very interesting
Ireland has

plains, hills, mountains, and sea cliffs.
The population is 5 million,

that’s 6 times as many people as Canada.
Their money is the Euro. Theirofficial languages are English and Irish.
They grow wheat, oats, potatoes, and mushrooms. They make dairy, clothing, machines, and software. The Irishnational bird is called the lapwing.
That is very COOL.
They also have a dog breed called the Irish wolfhound, which is the tallest dog breed in the

world.
That is so very COOL.
They can be up to 7 feet long from their nose to their tail.

Halloween was first celebrated in Ireland.
The people used to carve jack olanterns to scare OFF ghosts, but they used to make them out of turnips

instead of pumpkins. Halloween is my favourite holiday after Christmas.

The people mostly speak English in Ireland, but some still speak Irish.

The Irish word for a shamrock is seamrog.

Wallabies are animals that are kind of like kangaroos. They usuallyonly live in Australia, but 70 year’s AGO, someone brought a few of them to Lambay Island in Ireland.

Now the island is full of wallabies.
My dad hatesbees.

There are snakes on the islands nearby, but none in Ireland.

The peoplewondered why, so they came up with a myth that says St.
Patrick kicked them

ALL of the island.
St Patrick’s day is on March 17th, two day’s after my birthday every year.
That is so very COOL.

The Craft Section:
Celtic knots are a kind of drawing that was invented by the ancient Celtic people.
They lived in Ireland thousands of YEARS AGO.
They look like

a knot in a rope but unlike a rope, they usually have no beginning or end.

You can find them on anything from buildings to CHRISTMAS ornaments. Sincethey have no beginning or end, Celtic knots often symbolize infinity, which

is something that goes on forever, like endless love or friendship.*

Ireland’s national symbol is a harp.
The Irish harp is 1000 years old.

In Irish mythology harp players were said to be able to make people laugh,

cry, or even sleep.
Harp players play by plucking the strings with their

fingernails.
