•Mary Ann Shadd was born in Delaware in 1823

•She married a man named Thomas Cary in 1856.
•Mary Ann fled to Canada on the underground railroad around 1850 to be free
from slavery laws in the States
•When she got to Canada, she started her own newspaper. She was the first
black woman in North America to publish a newspaper and one of the first
female journalists in Canada
•She also started a school in Canada so that black children would be able
to get an education.
