` Canada’s Diversity

Diversity in Canada includes gender, religion, abilities and language.

Indigenous people were here first. They were not treated well by the immigrants who came to North America hundreds of years ago. Indigenous people are still not always treated fairly or nicely. The government of Canada told them how to act and forced Indigenous kids to go to residential schools far away from their home. In these schools, a lot of the kids were treated badly and they lost their Indigenous languages.

In 2021, a new holiday was made to recognize how badly Indigenous people were treated. It’s called National Day of Reconciliation. We wear orange shirts to remember the bad things that happened.

Final Thoughts

I am proud to be a Canadian citizen! I have learned that in order to be a good citizen, I have responsibilities to keep people safe, be kind, stand up for others, vote, recycle and make sure that everyone is treated equal. Canada is a great place to live, but there are always more ways to make it even better. I want to make sure that all people have the same rights and freedoms!
