Many kinds of owls hunt at night, but the snowy owl looks for food during the day.
They use fences, mounds on the ground, sand dunes, and hay bales as good spots to watch around them for animals they hunt.
Their favorite food is lemmings.
Lemmings are small mouse-like animals.
A snowy owl can eat 1,600 lemmings each year!
To catch a lemming, a snowy owl must be patient.
It might sit in one spot for hours.
It listens and watches. When it sees or hears it’s prey, the owl runs of flies over to pounce on its meal.
Snowy owls live in northern parts of North America, Europe, and Asia. They lay 3-11 white eggs at a time.
Their chicks need help from their parents when born, and can leave the nest after about 20 days.
