Science (Weather) Lesson: May 28, 2024

Today you get to learn about CLOUDS!

Clouds are a really important part of weather! You’ve already learned about how clouds affect rain, hail and thunderstorms. But, did you know that there are a bunch of different kinds of clouds? Each cloud looks different and produces different weather conditions. Here is your assignment for today:

1. Watch this video about clouds:

2. Go through pages 2 and 3 of the “Comparing Clouds” workbook. The large print version can be found after this assignment page.

3. Watch this video about the different types of clouds: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yod3wMbFHUY

4. Make your “Clouds Clipbook” using pages 4 and 5. Cut out the clouds and then glue them to the right section of the book.

5. Observe the clouds in the sky today. Make a note in your Cloud Observation Log (pg 6) for Tuesday. You’ll observe the clouds every day this week! Clip the log onto the chicken wire board and we’ll fill it in every day!

6. Do the “Cloud Craft”. You will need scissors, glue and markers or pencil crayons. Or, if you’d prefer, you can use yellow and blue paper to trace the arms, legs and raindrop with. When you’re done with the craft, you can clip it to the chicken wire board 😊.

7. Cut out a few more numbers so you can update the board with the current temperature and weather conditions.

Comparing Clouds

When you look in the sky what do you see?

Oftentimes we see clouds. Clouds are made up of tiny water droplets. There are 4 main types of clouds we see in the sky.

Cumulus clouds are easily seen on clear, sunny days. They are white and fluffy. When cumulus clouds begin to cover the sky and turn dark, they are preparing to release some form of precipitation.

Cumulonimbus clouds release rain, snow, sleet, or hail when they become too full to hold them any longer.

Another type of cloud you may see is a Cirrus Cloud. Cirrus clouds are high, thin, and wispy looking.

The fourth type of cloud is a Stratus cloud. Stratus clouds are low and grey.
