This bone is an anchor for the wing’s.
Without this strong structure, a bird can’NOT fly.
Most flightless bird’s do NOT have a keel.
For example, in the ostrich the sternum is flat like a human’s, as the ostrich doesn’t fly.
In the pigeon on the next page, the keel is pronounced and curved, like a ship.
