Nellie McClung

Nellie was born on October 20th, 1873 in the province of Ontario. Nellie had five older siblings.

When Nellie was 7 years old she moved to a farm in Manitoba, about 2 hours away from Steinbach.

When Nellie was 18years old she moved to Winnipeg in order to go to school to be a teacher.

She got married in 1896. Nellie had five children and lived in Winnipeg.

When her kids were young, she started to fight for women’s suffrage.

Nellie knew that women were smart and could think for themselves. So they should also be able to vote!

She gave lots of speeches in Manitoba and Saskatchewan trying to get support for women’s right to vote.

Nellie worked hard and got so many supporters that in 1916, women in Manitoba were able to vote!

Nellie was so excited to vote for the first time!

In 1916, Nellie and her family moved to Alberta.

In Alberta, Nellie was elected to be in the government. She was one of the first women to be voted in.

Nellie died on September 1st, 1951. She was 78 years old.
