Democracy
Canada uses a system of government called DEMOCRACY.
It is very important to Canadians.
In a democracy, the people choose their leaders.
The people over 18 can vote in Canada.
Adult citizens of Canada can vote when there is an election.
Whoever is elected helps make important decisions and laws. For instance, Justin Trudeau is Canada’s highest leader. He is the Prime Minister. Canadian citizens voted for him.
He was elected in October of 2015.
Canada used to be controlled by England. Canada became its own country in 1867. This was the first step in democacy because it meant that Canadians could choose their own leaders. People didn’t like it that England was choosing the leaders before this. They wanted independence! Just like I like to be independent and make my own decisions and do things for myself like get in and out of my wheelchair by myself!
