Christmas in Mexico is like a carnival, filled with colour, laughter, and
children’s games. Many festivities are held throughout Christmas, known as
las posadas. Nativity scenes are everywhere and include typical Mexican
elements, such as flamingos and prickly pears. People visit their friends
and family and attend mass. Santo Clos brings presents and the children
open them at midnight. One of the most popular activities is smashing a
pinata. Christmas pinatas are round and have seven points. Traditional food
includes roast pig or turkey, tamales, and special Christmas fruit salad.
Typical decorations include the poinsettia, a flower also known as the
Christmas star.
