Mathieu Da Costa

– He was born in 1589.

– He took the boat with explorers from France to Canada. He lived in Quebec City.

– He spoke lots of languages! He translated between the French and Indigenous people. This helped keep more peace between the different groups because Da Costa would try to calm disagreements.

– Da Costa was the first recorded Black person to come to Canada in the early 1600s.

– He was arrested because he voiced his opinion and French colonizers were racist and didn’t think that Black people should talk about their ideas.
